New Residency Opportunity – Call to Artists for 2016

We are delighted to announce new residency opportunities for 2016.

UZ Arts is inviting submissions from artists from any discipline to take part in an Artists Residency at the Sura Medura International Residency in Sri Lanka.

Sura Medura is located in Hikkaduwa, South West Sri Lanka. Established in 2011, the Sura Medura Residency Programme supports artists from all disciplines in the creation of work that is enhanced by being made in Sri Lanka. UZ Arts have been organizing International Residencies and arts programmes in Sri Lanka since 2005. For more information please see www.suramedura.com.

This opportunity is open to Scotland based artists or artists whose work will benefit the people of Scotland. There are two residency periods available, each of six weeks. The first between October 2016 and December 2016, and the second between February 2017 and March 2017. Artists can apply to take part in either one of these six week blocks.

The residency offers artists the chance to produce and present a new piece of work which responds to the environment of Sura Medura and Sri Lanka. Artists are encouraged to present their artistic practice at the beginning of their stay through our partnership with Colombo University of Visual and Performing Arts and to engage with the artistic community in Sri Lanka. At the end of their stay there will be an opportunity for artists to present the outcome of their residency, for example through exhibition, screening or performance. UZ Arts will also seek to present the outcomes of residencies in Scotland in 2017.

This artist call is funded through Creative Scotland. Sura Medura is also funded by the pan-European network Insitu and arts organisations in the Czech Republic, Ireland and USA. One of the benefits of this support is that the residency often hosts artists from several countries during a residency block.

Artists taking part in the October – December residency will have the opportunity to submit their work for consideration for inclusion in the Colombo Art Biennale, which will take place in the capital of Sri Lanka at the end of November 2016.

For artists taking part in the February – March residency there will be a specific opportunity to collaborate with other artists taking part in the residency in addition to making their own work.

The residency programme will cover travel, food and accommodation costs for artists and includes a fee of £2,000 to cover all material and production costs for work produced.

Note

The residency environment is challenging but very rewarding. We recommend applicant to research Sri Lankan information sites and the blogs of previous artists
